How to Roll a Joint

how to roll a joint for beginners

Learning how to roll a joint is without a doubt one of the most important rites of passage for any stoner. You could even say it is more like an initiation into the world of stoners. If you have been trying your hand at rolling the perfect joint but don’t seem to have figured it out yet, fret not. In this post, we are going to show you how to do it the right way so that you can become a pro at it and “wow” your friends with your new skills. So let us jump right into it.

What You’ll Need

In order to roll your first perfect joint, you will need:

  •  good quality flower (buds)
  • rolling papers
  •  a weed grinder
  • filter tips
  •  lighter or matchbox

If you are slightly nervous about blowing your first attempt, you can go for some mid-range flower. You don’t need to worry about getting a fancy grinder either because a basic model will work just fine. In case you don’t have a ton of cash to put into filter tips, you can simply create them from cut-outs of business cards or any other disposable cards that you have lying around. Finally, make sure you have good quality rolling papers since this will make the process a lot easier.

Step by Step Guide on How to Roll the Perfect Joint

Once you have all the tools you need to roll your first joint, here is how to do it:

  • Grind Your Weed

Getting the right consistency is very important when prepping to roll a joint. You need to ensure that your weed is ground properly since this will make your joint burn more evenly. In order to do so, put your bud in the grinder and twist it until you can’t feel anymore resistance. Some ‘kief’ will settle at the bottom chamber of your grinder which you can garnish on top of your bowl to make it more potent.

  • Grab Your Filter

While you don’t necessarily need a filter when rolling a joint, having one is very useful since it blocks bits of flower from slipping out as you smoke and getting into your mouth. If you are making a DIY filter out of paper cut-outs, start by rolling it into accordion folds. You should keep in mind that the thicker your filter is, the thicker your joint will be and vice versa - so decide accordingly.

  • Fill up Your Rolling Paper

Place a strip of rolling paper on top of a tray or magazine and load some of your freshly ground flowers on it along the crease. Be sure to leave a little space on one end so that you can place your filter.

  • Pinch and Roll

Using both hands, grab the loaded paper on each end, pinch the top and rub your fingers together in an up-and-down manner. What this does is to push the flower into a compact little log that is the same size as your filter. Next, tuck the unglued side of the paper around the filter and roll. Don’t worry too much if you don’t get it right the first time. With regular practice and patience, you will find that it comes a lot more naturally.

  • Lick and Twist

The last step is to lick the glued inseam of your rolling paper and seal it. You can tap the filter against a flat surface to help the flower settle in properly or make it more compact by pushing a pointy object such as a pencil or matchstick through the joint. Finally, twist the excess rolling paper on the open end of your joint to keep everything in place. Congratulations, you have just successfully rolled your first joint.

Additional Tips for Rolling a Joint

  • In case your joint becomes loose while you are rolling it, simply start the process again with a tighter pinch around the filter

  • Don’t grind your flower too finely since this can prevent air from flowing through your joint while you smoke thus making it go off every time.

In Conclusion

While rolling a joint may seem like rocket science if you are a beginner, it isn’t really hard to do. Master these simple techniques to become a pro at rolling joints and impress your friends with your newly learnt skill.
